Meet the…
Mathematician
Dr Rachel Quinlan
Mathematics that you can do with a piece of paper (and nothing else)
One of the great things about being a mathematician is that you don’t need any special equipment, and you can do mathematics anywhere. We will talk about some mathematics that you can discover with nothing more than a piece of paper (not even a pen). Paper is an amazingly useful and versatile material.
You are invited to make something from paper (like an aeroplane or a boat or a flower or a decoration – anything at all!) before we meet on January 10, and share a photograph of it. Your work will be part of the talk.
Meet the Scientist’ is part of the START initiative – a national competition challenging primary schools to create their very own randomised control trial. START is recognised by teachers as a ‘unique teaching tool’ allowing children to collaborate and enjoy a structured problem solving approach. Visit www.STARTcompetition. com to get your school involved.
